THE SAMARITANS

Founded in 1953, the Samaritans now have 20,000 volunteers responding to around 10,000 calls for help – day or night – 365 days a year. They offer support to anyone who needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure.

In prisons, schools, hospitals and on the rail network, Samaritans work with people who are going through a difficult time and train others to do the same.

CHILDREN IN NEED

The first ever Children in Need appeal was broadcast on BBC radio on Christmas Day in 1927 and raised the princely sum of £1,300. Between 1980 and 2018, Children in Need had raised £1bn for over 3,900 local charities and projects, which directly support children and young people in communities right across the UK.

MIND

Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem. MIND believe that no-one should have to face a mental health problem alone, which is why they’ll listen, give you support and advice, and fight your corner via their Infoline, legal line and their award-winning information.

ST HELENS CHRISTMAS GIFT APPEAL

Since 2010, St Helens Borough Council has run a gift appeal for children aged from birth to 21 years at risk of waking up on Christmas Day without a present.

During that time, tens of thousands of items have been donated, with 2020’s appeal alone resulting in gifts being shared out between more than 630 children and young people – including care leavers.
