The Design Manager is responsible for managing a team of circa 7 draughtsmen with varied skills to create new designs and drawings for onward production. They will have to fully understand the customers’ requirements by liaising closely with sales offering their advice and expertise when they first receive the initial order. The Design Manager is responsible for keeping all communication channels precise and clear ensuring the best options for both production and the customer. They will on a day to day basis manage staff, projects and procurement of both hardware and software for the team keeping the workflow effective. They will always be expected to delegate tasks accordingly whilst remaining commercially savvy. They will not be expected to be ‘on the tools’ day in day out, when necessary they will need to assist with drawings e.g. in the case of absence, complex drawings, or demanding timescales. However, they are a people manager before all else. The successful Design Manager will be expected to carry out regular team member reviews. They must possess knowledge of the ‘bespoke manufacturing’ industry and it would be an advantage to have 3D modelling and Solid Works experience.
